In 1965, Muhammad Ali fought Sonny Liston in Lewiston, Maine, in a highly anticipated heavyweight title rematch. The fight, which took place on May 25, 1965, is famous for the controversial "phantom punch" knockout. Ali, then known as Cassius Clay, had previously defeated Liston in 1964 to win the title. The rematch was initially scheduled for Boston but moved to Lewiston due to logistical issues. The fight is a significant part of Lewiston's history and is commemorated by a statue of Ali.
